Daniel and Revelation

A Prophecy For the Time Of the End

The 12th chapter of Daniel foretells things that are to occur during the time of the end. It depicts Michael, the archangel standing up in behalf of his people, it depicts a great resurrection, and describes the bride class as “those having insight,” who are destined to “shine as brightly as the expanse of heaven” (Daniel 12:1-3). However, Daniel was told that the words contained in the prophecy “are to be kept secret and sealed up until the time of the end” (Daniel 12:9). The fulfillment of this directive was given as a vision to John, who described the words of the angel that spoke to him, saying, “Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this scroll, for the appointed time is near” (Revelation 22:10).

After the angel told John not to seal up the words of the prophecy, he was told, “Let the one who is unrighteous continue in unrighteousness, and let the filthy one continue in his filth; but let the righteous one continue in righteousness, and let the holy one continue in holiness” (Revelation 22:11) These words are a confirmation of the prophecy previously given to Daniel, saying, “Many will cleanse themselves and whiten themselves and will be refined. And the wicked ones will act wickedly, and none of the wicked will understand, but those having insight will understand” (Daniel 12:10)

Because Daniel refers to those who act wickedly and those who have insight as two distinct groups within the context of those who are cleansed and whitened and refined, it is apparent that the wicked and the ones with insight come from that same group of refined people.

This raises the question, “how can a refined people have amongst them wicked ones?” The answer to that question is given to us in Isaiah 48:10, which reads “Look! I have refined you, but not in the form of silver” (emphasis ours). In other words, Jehovah has caused a refining process to occur among those whom He has called to be His people, but the refining process is not yet complete, as in “the form of silver.”

This refinement started with C. T. Russell in the 1870s and continued up to 1914 and beyond. Although Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that the ultimate refinement of God’s people was carried out between the years of 1914 and 1919 [1], in fact, the ultimate refinement has not even started yet. This is evidenced by the fact that there are still stumbling blocks within the congregation itself. Once the Great Refiner comes, as spoken of in Malachi, then the ultimate refinement of God’s people will occur. It is then that they will be clarified “like gold and like silver” (Malachi 3:3).

Isaiah: A Prophecy Concerning Jehovah’s People

To understand what is going on with Jehovah’s people this close to the time of the end, an in-depth look at the 48th chapter of Isaiah will prove advantageous. The first two verses say:

Hear this, O house of Jacob,
You who call yourselves by the name of Israel
And who have come from the waters of Judah,
You who swear by the name of Jehovah
And who call on the God of Israel,
Though not in truth and righteousness.
For they call themselves after the holy city
And seek the support of the God of Israel
Whose name is Jehovah of armies.

In these two verses, we are introduced to God’s people, “the house of Jacob,”1 who “swear by the name of Jehovah” and “seek the support of the God of Israel.” Who might this people be in modern times? The only people today who “call on the God of Israel,” whose name is Jehovah, are, of course, Jehovah’s Witnesses. They call themselves by the name of Israel and “after the holy city” through terms such as “spiritual Israel,” and “Israel of God.” Also, there is no question that Jehovah’s Witnesses “seek the support of [Jehovah],” but how is it that Jehovah’s Witnesses have “come from the waters of Judah?”

When Jesus told a Samaritan woman of the “living water,” about which she inquired, “From what source, then, do you have this living water,” Jesus answered her, “Everyone who drinks from this water [referring to the water in the well] will get thirsty again. Whoever drinks from the water I will give him will never get thirsty at all, but the water I will give him will become in him a spring of water bubbling up to impart everlasting life” (John 4:10-14). The life-giving water that Jesus was referring to, the same “waters of Judah” from which Jehovah’s Witnesses have come, is a true understanding of, and closeness with, the God of Israel, Jehovah, and his son Jesus Christ. It is through this understanding of who Jehovah is and who his Son is that we are able to enter into an acceptable relationship with them both and be in line to receive everlasting life.

How, though, have Jehovah’s Witnesses not called on the God of Israel “in truth and righteousness?” Daniel 11:35 states, “And some of those having insight will be made to stumble, in order to do a refining work […] until the time of the end; because it is yet for the appointed time.” Jehovah’s Witnesses tell us the “appointed times of the nations” ended in 1914, but here, the appointed time is being related to the time of the end. In fact, the appointed time of the nations did not end in 1914, it is yet a future event.2 Because almost all of the Watchtower’s interpretation of prophecy hinges on its 1914 doctrine, the Watchtower is indeed not “in truth” (at least not all the way).

How is the Society not then “in righteousness?” Personal stories about how the elders and others in appointed positions among Jehovah’s Witnesses have not responded to pleas and requests in a manner befitting a shepherd of God’s flock3 abound. Concerning child sex abusers, the Society has made a unilateral decision to misapply the “two witness rule,” found at Deuteronomy 19:15 4 by not even investigating claims of child sex abuse without a second witness to testify against the accused.5 In addition to this, news reports abound of the Society using legal gag orders enforced by hush money to silence the victims of child sex abuse ([5], [6], [7], [8], [9], [10], [11], [12], [13],[14}, [15]) as well as invoking ecclesiastical privilege in order to avoid providing testimony in court that could potentially bring justice to the victims out of a fear of its effect on the Society’s image.[16]

However, even if all these allegations against the Society concerning the protection of child abusers are incorrect, there is still the unquestionable fact that Jehovah’s Witnesses have engaged in a form of organizational idolatry, raising the Society to a position of reverence that should be reserved for Jehovah alone. Also, there’s the Society’s 10 year arrangement with the U.N., which was questionable at best, given the Society’s prophetic view of the U.N. [17]

“From Now On I am Announcing New Things to You”

Moving on, Isaiah 48:3-5 reads:

The former things I told you long ago.
From my own mouth they went out,
And I made them known.
Suddenly I took action, and they came about.
Because I knew how stubborn you are
—that your neck is an iron sinew and your forehead is copper—
I told you long ago.
Before it came about, I caused you to hear it,
So that you could not say, “My idol did this;
My carved image and my metal image commanded this.”

So here, we are seeing Jehovah speak to his people (who have been Jehovah’s Witnesses until now) and telling them of something he prophesied about long ago. What prophecy or prophecies is Jehovah referring to here? Jehovah is referring to the prophecies concerning his people in the time of the end. How can we be sure of this?

To answer that, we need to ask why Jehovah is referring back to prophecies of long ago. Jehovah himself answers: “So that you could not say, ‘My own idol did this; my carved image and my metal image commanded this.’” What is the modern-day idol that Jehovah is referring to? Remember that the Watchtower Society itself has become an organizational golden calf to Jehovah’s Witnesses. So the question is, then, what work do Jehovah’s Witnesses continually praise the Society for accomplishing?

Keep in mind that the prophecies Jehovah is alluding to are those concerning his people during the time of the end, and that although the time of the end is not yet present, Jehovah’s Witnesses believe it is here, and the work that the Society continually cites as evidence for this is the “world-wide preaching work of Jehovah’s Witnesses.” While it is true that the preaching work accomplished by Jehovah’s Witnesses is remarkable and is something that Jehovah has moved his people to accomplish in order to further his purpose, it is not the final witness spoken of in Revelation, as Jehovah’s Witnesses would have you believe. This is true because we are not currently in the time of the end.6

Take, for example, the service and growth records kept by Jehovah’s Witnesses. Such records are unnecessary, for Jehovah already knows the extent of the service of his people. Indeed, there is no Scriptural basis for keeping such records. The sole purpose served by these records are for praising the Society for its accomplishments. However, the praise for such accomplishments belongs to Jehovah, and Jehovah alone. Thus, such praise raises the organization up to a level of glory that should be reserved exclusively for Jehovah. Hence, Jehovah told these things “long ago” so that Jehovah’s Witnesses could not say, “My idol did this.”

Verse 6 goes on to read:

You have heard and seen all of this.
Will you not declare it?
From now on I am announcing new things to you,
Guarded secrets that you have not known.

So what’s going on here? We just learned that Jehovah’s Witnesses tout the accomplishments of the Society in regards to their preaching work as evidence for our being in the time of the end, so why is Jehovah here saying, “Will you not declare it?” Keep in mind that the prophecies that are being alluded to are all the prophecies that concern Jehovah’s people during the time of the end. So what prophecies could possibly be in God’s Word that Jehovah’s servants have not declared?

Earlier in this commentary, we briefly touched on the refining process that must still take place, as alluded to in the third chapter of Malachi. Over and over again, the prophets (both major and minor) speak of the denunciation and judgments of God against his people in order to accomplishing the refining work7 (Daniel 11:32-35). Jehovah’s Witnesses, however, continually either divert those judgments towards Christendom, or misapply them to the time frame between 1914 and 1919. By doing this, they nullify God’s words and refuse to declare his judgments against themselves. Mission Statement

So now we come to a point in this work that forms the basis of our mission statement, which begins with the second half of Isaiah 48:6 and continues through Isaiah 48:7, which will be presented here:

From now on I am announcing new things to you,
Guarded secrets that you have not known.
Only now are they being created, and not long ago,
Things that you have never heard before today,
So that you cannot say, “Look! I already know them.”

This span of verses states that there are “new things,” which “you have never heard before today, so that you cannot say, ‘Look! I already know them.’” What are these new things? In the first century, the new things that the leaders of God’s people did not know had to do with God’s Kingdom. Specifically, the new things concerned the nature of the Kingdom (that it would rule from heaven and not from earth), that the Messiah would have to die in order to inherit the Kingdom, and that he would have 144,000 helpers, anointed with Holy Spirit, picked from mankind, and given the hope of ruling alongside Jesus in heaven and of receiving immortality.

At the time of this writing, the modern-day “new things” that have not yet been known have yet to be revealed. With that said, certain individuals have been given but the briefest glimpse into some of what those new things are. What we can say at this time is that at least a small part of what has yet to be revealed concerns the very nature of Jehovah himself and there are yet other new things concerning the nature of His Kingdom.8

Our mission, as lowly servants of Jehovah is to carry out His will. We have been given a privilege, the slightest glimmer of light into Jehovah’s true nature and the unfathomable depths of his love, mercy, and compassion, and with that privilege comes the responsibility of carrying out His will. That is our ultimate goal and purpose now, in this place and time. This may well come to include our announcing Jehovah’s judgments against His people (Isa. 48:14, 16), only time will tell. But for now, we must have patience and endurance.

 “I have Refined You, But Not in the Form of Silver”

Isaiah 48:8-11

Isaiah 48:8-11 reads:

No, you have not heard, you have not known
And in the past your ears were not opened.
For I know that you are very treacherous,
And you have been called a transgressor from birth.
But for the sake of my name I will hold back my anger;
For my own praise I will restrain myself toward you,
And I will not do away with you.
Look! I have refined you, but not in the form of silver.
I have tested you in the smelting furnace of affliction
For my own sake, for my own sake I will act,
For how could I let myself be profaned?
I give my glory to no one else.

As mentioned earlier, Jehovah’s Witnesses have been moved by God to accomplish a specific work in conjunction with Jehovah’s purpose. That work was to restore Bible truth and dispel the superstitions and demonic lies associated with Christendom. Such lies as the Trinity and hellfire bring reproach on Jehovah, so “for [Jehovah’s] sake,” he has acted to restore true worship.

However, along with those truths, also came lies, deceptions, and the Society’s own form of Babylonish idolatry and teachings. From the birth of the organization, as pointed out in Isaiah 48:8, Biblical truth was mixed with pyramidology, which seemed to confirm the 1914 calculation.9 Hence, Jehovah’s Witnesses “have been called a transgressor from birth.” That in conjunction with the organizational idolatry and the rest of the Society’s sketchy dealings has also brought reproach on Jehovah.

But Jehovah held back his anger for the sake of his name. He allowed the Society to bring Jehovah’s name back into use, and to remove the tarnish that Christendom’s Bible interpretations placed on it. In this way, the initial refining took place of God’s people. But as mentioned before, more refinement is in order.

“The Disgusting Thing That Causes Desolation”

Of course, we know that the Great Refiner is Jesus Christ, and that his return will mark a period of great upheaval for the whole earth, starting first with the House of God (or Beth-el, as it is known in Hebrew). This upheaval of God’s house will be one outworking of the refinement process that must yet take place, but how will it occur?

Daniel 12:11 goes on to relate: “And from the time that the constant feature (or ‘the continual sacrifice’) has been removed and the disgusting thing that causes desolation has been put in place, there will be 1,290 days!” The modern-day continual sacrifice offered up by Jehovah’s people today is their continual devotion and worship in the form of meetings and field service, and the enormous resources dedicated to the continual production of publications and “Bible-based literature.” The question then remains, “what is the disgusting thing that causes desolation?”

In the first century, C.E., the disgusting thing prophesied by Jesus was the Roman army that invaded Jehovah’s center of worship. If this is to be a pattern for our day, then the disgusting thing must likewise be a governmental force.

At Daniel 11:15, the king of the north throws up a siege rampart against “a fortified city.” In response to this, an entity will come against him “and do as he pleases” (Daniel 11:16a) The second part of this verse also says that entity “will stand in the land of the Decoration.”

The “land of the Decoration” is the land in which the Decoration resides. The original land of the Decoration was Judea, the Decoration being the place where Jehovah once caused his name reside, namely, Jerusalem and the temple. Even though, during the 1st century, Jerusalem and the temple were abandoned by Jehovah, it still held significance for Jewish Christians during that time. Jerusalem and the temple typify God’s organization today, namely, the Watchtower, which has similarly been abandoned by Jehovah. As noted by King, the “temple” of the Watchtower, Bethel headquarters, is located in the same “city” that the UN headquarters is located in. As we shall see in the third paper, entitled, “The Time of the End,” the UN will prove to be the disgusting thing

Later on in the 11th chapter of Daniel, the defeat of the king of the north is revealed (Daniel 11:29, 30). Daniel 11:31 describes the armies of the one who defeated the king of the north (the UN) putting the disgusting thing in place in the sanctuary (of Jehovah’s Witnesses). The disgusting thing will deceive Jehovah’s Witnesses and lead them into apostasy “by means of smooth words” (Daniel 11:32). But why would Jehovah’s Witnesses allow themselves to come under the control of the UN? This has to do with the influence of the “man of lawlessness” (see the next section below, entitled "He Will Clarify Them Like Gold and Like Silver").

Daniel 11:32 goes on to say, “But the people who know their God will prevail and act effectively.” Thus, the refining process.10

 “He Will Clarify Them Like Gold and Like Silver”

Daniel 11:32-35 reads:

And those who act wickedly against the covenant, he will lead into apostasy by means of smooth words. But the people who know their God will prevail and act effectively. And those having insight among the people will impart understanding to the many. And they will be made to stumble by sword and by flame, by captivity and by plundering, for some days. But when they are made to stumble, they will be given a little help; and many will join them by means of smooth speech. And some of those having insight will be made to stumble, in order to do a refining work, because of them and to do a cleansing and a whitening until the time of the end; because it is yet for the time appointed.

Notice in this span of verses that there are two stumblings mentioned. One stumbling is in connection with the many upon whom “understanding” is imparted by those “having insight among the people,” and the second stumbling befalls those simply “having insight.” In contrast to those with true insight, those with insight “among the people,” that is, among Jehovah’s Witnesses, is the Governing Body. This understanding of events that will be occurring at that time will be false understanding, and by means of that false understanding, many will stumble “by sword and by flame, by captivity and by plundering.”11 Note the wording of Revelation 13:9, 10, which says, “If anyone has an ear, let him hear, if anyone is meant for captivity, he will go into captivity. If anyone will kill with the sword, he must be killed with the sword. This is where it calls for endurance on the part of the holy ones.” If the holy ones want to be keep their privileged position, it will require endurance on their part, for the simple fact that by making the choice to join with those having true insight will not only make them a target for Jehovah’s Witnesses, who will shun them, but also a target for Satan’s political beast.

Note 2 Thessalonians 2:3, 4, which reads, in part, “it [the day of Jehovah] will not come unless the apostasy comes first and the man of lawlessness gets revealed, the son of destruction. […] He sits down in the temple of God, publicly showing himself to be a god.”

The man of lawlessness, being an agent of Satan, is identified as “the son of destruction,” a phrase used to describe Judas, and hence, the man of lawlessness must come from among God’s people. Indeed, during the time of the end, the man of lawlessness will lead the Watchtower Society into apostasy, as noted in Daniel 11:32. At that time, when Christ’s true presence is revealed, then the Society itself, being under the control of Satan’s agents, will reject the Messiah, and as a result, God will reject them. This pattern was established in the 1st century, when the Jews rejected the first appearance of Christ. And just as the Jewish religion then became apostate at that time, so too, will the Society then become a member of Babylon the Great. This will be the time when the call is made to flee to the mountains (Matthew 24:15, 16).

As mentioned at the beginning of this section, those with true insight will also be made to stumble. However, unlike the stumbling of Jehovah’s Witnesses, the purpose behind this stumbling is in order to do a refining work. The latter half of Isaiah 48 is Jehovah’s call to his people to repentance. Verses 14 and 15 describe the destruction of Babylon (Babylon the Great in modern times). Just as Cyrus, the next king in line for world domination brought down Babylon during the time of the Israelites, so too, will it be the final king, the eighth king of Daniel’s prophecy, that Jehovah will use to cause the fall of Babylon the Great (Revelation 16:16, 17). This is where the faith of the holy ones comes in, as mentioned earlier in Revelation 13:10. Those who wish to survive the destruction of Babylon the Great must “Get out of her” (Revelation 18:4). Those who have enough faith to follow Christ and leave the then apostate organization will then finally be clarified “like gold and like silver.”
